A familiar blueprint is back on the elevator at the Gon- zales Purina Mills plant. "We're bringing the checkerboard dorsum," said Joe Fuller, regional sales manager for Purina Mills during a tour of plant fa- cilities for regional retail- ers on June 6. "This Gon- zales plant is 1 of the pinnacle
ve in the U.S. for Purina
Mills." Ralston Purina is famed for its "checkerboard" trademark. The inspiration for the logo came from the babyhood of founder William Danforth, who re- chosen checkerboard cloth from his babyhood. The checkerboard trademark, intended to make their bur- lap bags of feed stand up out from competitors, was in- troduced in 1904. The Gonzales plant, which went online in 1969, will exist getting an equip- ment upgrade this summer, according to institute manager Rick Duncan. That new equipment will brand the
plant even more efcient
and cost-constructive — which volition be a alpine social club to beat. The Gonzales found, which employs twoscore people, runs 24 hours a day, 6 or vii days a week, Duncan said. On an average solar day information technology will mix, pelletize, bag, palletize and ship some 12,000 bags of feed per day for horses, cows, chickens, hogs, deer and "only about everything except dogs," Duncan said. That adds up to around 165,000 tons a twelvemonth. The Purina make has generated intense loy- alty over the years, Fuller said, because the visitor doesn't compromise on quality. While nearly of the opera- tion att he establish these days is automated and comput- erized, technicians at the plant pay particular atten- tion to micro-ingredients and additives. Each batch gets its micro-ingredients added past hand for quality control. "When you make a cake, you tin substitute stuff and all the same get a cake," said long-time employee Albert Rodriguez. "We can't practise that."
